How SASAPA Works

The Award:

  • Won by a student in Grade 11 at the start of the academic year, based on Grade 10 academic performance.

  • Named after a member of the school community who has made an impact after leaving the school at which we provide the award.

  • Presented during a SASAPA-run prizegiving, as well as during an assembly or recognition event at each school.

  • May subsidize school fees (up to R500) for the following year (organized with the school).

  • Small cash prize (R300) for the student.

  • Trophy / gift provided to the winner to keep (for example, a school bag).

  • The following year in Grade 12, the student will receive up to R200 in reimbursement for application fees to a university.

Award Criteria:

  • Academic performance based on total overall marks on combined 6 compulsory school subjects. Any subject can be used for the calculation.

  • Where students are tied, leadership and community involvement can be used as criteria.

Follow up for Award:

  • The scholarship is a once-off award, but continued contact with the student is maintained.

  • All winners may participate in our mentorship program which will include a few additional sessions during the year, as well as networking with other organizations that we find valuable. This is based on continued academic performance and school attendance.

  • The yearly AGM is open to current and former winners, as well as principles and the primary teacher at our partner schools.

School Commitment:

  • A teacher will be appointed from the school to act as a point of contact. Principles and this teacher may attend the yearly AGM to determine strategy and policy for each year.

  • Schools commit to take ownership of the program, and provide an opportunity to recognize top students e.g. in an assembly.

  • Schools commit to keeping contact details and student involvement updated with SASAPA, as well as providing the names and details of the student who has won the award each year.

Financing:

  • Funds are raised by SASAPA. The board covers all administrative costs. Any external donations go straight to the awards commitment to the winners and the schools.

  • Further funding is sought from corporate sponsors, individuals, and government groups, especially for items such as prizes.

Benefits of Scholarship Program:

  • Incentivize hard work, and illustrating the positive impacts to others.

  • Creating positive new role models.

  • Increase competition at schools among top performers.

  • Benefit to other students from studying alongside top performers who can assist in schoolwork.

  • Start bridging the divide between the academic opportunity and rewards in schools of different resource levels.
